This is an account of the personal and professional life of a quiet, perceptive general practitioner and academic with a wide range of interests. It describes his life of travelling hopefully and organising his curiosity to try to find meaning in all that he experienced. The book encompasses a broad scope, from country practice to international participation, from gardening to medical research, from family life to philosophical quest. In this spiritual and thoughtful work, the drama and personal satisfaction lies in the author's ongoing interaction with many different people. Author Bio-Charles Bridges-Webb spent his early childhood as the son of a country doctor, and then grew up in Melbourne. He did medicine at the University of Melbourne, and from 1960 spent 15 years as a country general practitioner in Traralgon in Gippsland. He became an active member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and commenced general practice research, which he liked to call "organised curiosity". Through this he became a member of the World Organisation of Family Doctors' (WONCA) International Classification Committee at its inception in 1972 and was chairman 1991-1999. He was appointed as Foundation Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Sydney in 1975, where he also did some writing and teaching on the history and philosophy of medicine. He was intent on exploring and living life to the full, and that meant having many interests. He enjoys a wonderful marriage and found a growing family and their activities enriching. A huge garden has always been a constant source of exercise and relaxation, supplemented in earlier years by cricket and refereeing soccer. He became increasingly involved with church activities as a lay preacher, and an interest in art grew. He explored his family history and wrote about it. He took early retirement in 1994 and ceased clinical practice, but is still involved in some research activities.
